Insects and pests can be carriers of life threatening disease in the community. This is why getting rid of them is very important if we would want to have a healthy society. The electric bug zapper is a device that lures insects into a light source and then when they are near it, it shocks and kills them with the use of electricity. This is because insects are quite attracted to light and with a bug zapper glowing brighter than any light in your house also great for your patio or bbq area, it would attract majority of the bugs lingering around.

These bug zappers were first invented by William F. Folmer and Harrison L. Chapin in 1934. Separately, Dr. W.B. Herms also work on an invention of his own during this time. Both teams came up with similar results: a fly trapping device that used a piece of meat to lure flies inside the hollow path and the electrocute them. The modern design of bug zappers is of similar elements with the original one; with some adjustments of course.

Today’s electric bug zapper uses grounder metal bars that would kill the insects over an ultraviolet light emitting fluorescent lamp light source. The ultraviolet light emitted is only visible to insects and this is ne one of the light sources that attract them the most. The present bug zapper that we have is electrically powered and needs to be plugged in in order to work.

Because of innovation of times, there are a number of new designs and prototypes for bug zappers. There is one that is solar powered. It’s practically the same process of attracting bugs and killing them but power use to operate the device is solar (which is ideal for those sunny places). Some designs even have trays to catch the falling insects that got killed. However, there are still companies that design theirs in a way that debris will just fall to the ground.

At times, you might find the powerful electric bug zapper as a bulky device. I mean, you can’t swat flies with it. So a new design that looks like a fly swatter was invented. This model of the electric bug zapper looks like a small tennis racket with the paddling area as the grounded part. Another new design is the electric flea combs; this is good for those furry pets that we have.
